Who would you vote into the bunker?

So I recently re-watched a movie I first saw a few years ago called After the Dark.

In an international school in Jakarta, a philosophy class is having its last session. The professor challenges twenty graduating seniors to select ten who would take shelter underground for one year and then emerge to rebuild the human race following a nuclear attack. The students are each provided varying attributes, skills and professions that may or may not be deemed as valuable in reforming society one year following the attack. While the professor and individual students may have differing opinions regarding which skills and talents may be of the most value during the year underground and in rebuilding society after that year, one pivotal and timeless question is addressed. Which is more valuable to individuals, and thus society as a whole, Art or Science? –IMDB

The students and teacher, Mr. Zimit, go through the scenario 3 different times. Mr. Zimit gives everyone an occupation and some sort of personality trait. All 20 students debate which 10 people get a spot in the doomsday bunker. Mr. Zimit is the wild card.

Each time I watch this movie I have a different opinion on who should spend the year in the bunker and each time Mr. Zimit’s behavior gets just a little more creepy. The whole “We have to get a pregnancy going because our job is now to repopulate the Earth” thing was super disturbing. I enjoyed that all 3 scenarios ending with Mr. Zimit dying.

But, this movie really makes you question, who would you choose to survive? The doctor who may or may not have the Ebola virus? The Opera singer who has throat cancer? The soldier with an eidetic memory? The engineer with two different engineering degrees? The wild card who could be important or useless? Is it important to have only scientists and people with practical skills to rebuild after the end? Or artists? Is it important to just survive or is it important to find a way to live a happy life? The movie takes it to extremes, all practical choices or all whimsical choices. They never really experiment with mixing both sides.

The ending of the movie is slightly predictable…and creepy. The whole student-teacher relationship is disturbing in any situation, but the way Mr. Zimit manipulates the whole situation to separate the female lead from her boyfriend takes it way over the edge. Here’s an interesting review.

There are also some familiar faces in the movie. Bonnie Wright who plays Ginny Weasley in Harry Potter and Daryl Sabara who played Juni Cortez in Spy Kids. Also Mr. Zimit is played by James D’Arcy, who I think is phenomenal in just about everything he’s done.

I’d love to hear how others would go about deciding who would survive in the bunker.
